When is Melbourne Cup Day in 2026?
The Victoria Racing Club lists Lexus Melbourne Cup Day for Tuesday 3 November 2026 at Flemington. The official event page was checked on 22 October 2026.
Use the organiser for event information. This guide does not publish a final field, barrier draw, race-day conditions or live bookmaker odds. Those details need their own current sources and timestamps. The calculator examples below do not name or represent real runners.
Know which bet you are looking at
You do not need to become a form expert to understand the basic bet types. A win bet needs your runner to win. A place bet pays according to the market’s stated placing terms, which need checking for that race. Each-way combines a win bet and a place bet: $10 each-way costs $20, not $10. Sportsbet’s bet-type explanation sets out that two-part stake. Always check the placing terms offered for the actual race.
With fixed odds, the accepted price is recorded when the bet is accepted, subject to the bookie’s settlement rules. A tote return is determined through its pool and dividend rules. A displayed tote estimate is not an accepted fixed price. TAB explains the accepted fixed price and its settlement exceptions, while Sportsbet’s racing-price definitions distinguish fixed prices from pooled tote betting.
Before comparing two offers, match the event, runner and bet type. They need to describe the same thing.
For two fixed win prices on the same runner, the basic arithmetic is straightforward. At a hypothetical $20 stake, decimal odds of 6.00 return $120 if the runner wins; 7.00 returns $140. The $20 difference is conditional on winning. A losing bet returns $0 at either price.
Our price-comparison calculator lets you change those inputs. For real upcoming races, the public Australian racing odds page shows observed prices and their source times. It only shows races covered by the current feed; it is not a Cup field or a set of Cup tips. Check settlement rules and whether the prices are still available before treating them as comparable.
If you are splitting a budget
You can leave the race alone, keep to one selection or split an already fixed budget. Splitting it is different from putting the full amount on each runner. If your total budget is $100 across three runners, the allocations should still add to $100.
A dutching calculation targets similar total returns if any backed selection wins. It does not protect against an unbacked runner winning, nor does it decide which horses deserve a place in the group. Enter your own hypothetical or observed prices below. Nothing is placed with a bookmaker.
Read the last row as carefully as the first
If an unbacked runner wins, all the backed win bets lose. The calculator therefore displays the loss of the entire entered budget beside the possible winning returns.
The split can also produce a net loss even when a backed selection wins, depending on the prices entered. Do not infer an edge from a tidy allocation. Rounding to cents can make the returns slightly different; the table shows the result after that rounding.
For the formula and a fully worked example, read dutching betting explained. Betfair’s betting glossary is the source for the term; our calculator excludes exchange commission and other special settlement.
What could change the settlement?
Check the rules for scratchings, deductions, dead heats, minimum stakes and void bets. Place and each-way markets have additional terms. An exchange also has commission. The simple back-bet calculator does not model these conditions or check acceptance.
A quote seen earlier is not evidence of the price available when a bet is accepted. A named runner in an article is not evidence that it remains in the field. Those are separate live checks, especially when using an older saved comparison.
Keep the race context with the price
The venue, distance, draw, rail position and conditions matter when assessing a racing claim. A broad historical pattern cannot establish the likely result of one race. Our guide to track bias and pace maps explains what useful evidence should show.
The public tools remain available without an account. When you want to research the race further, BetBible Racing provides race cards, runners and track context through a free account. Creating the account does not start a membership trial. The explanation and calculator stay available here either way.
