Total return, including the stakes. Rounding can make returns differ.
| Outcome | Stake | Return if it wins | Net result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selection A | $50.00 | $200.00 | $100.00 |
| Selection B | $33.33 | $199.98 | $99.98 |
| Selection C | $16.67 | $200.04 | $100.04 |
| An unbacked runner wins | — | $0.00 | -$100.00 |
Backing several runners still leaves a losing outcome. If a runner you have not backed wins, you lose the whole $100.00.
How the split works
Each stake gets a share of the budget in proportion to 1 ÷ its decimal odds. We round to cents, then assign remaining cents to the largest rounding fractions. The stakes always add to your entered budget. The table uses the actual rounded stakes and returns.
Assumes separate back bets in one win market, with one winning selection and matching settlement rules. It does not establish an edge, verify complete market coverage or place bets. Exchange commission, minimum bookmaker stakes, dead heats, voids and scratchings are excluded.
More selections still leave a losing outcome.
Dutching distributes separate stakes across several selections in the same win market. The idea is to make the total return similar whichever backed selection wins. It does not make the selections better value or protect the budget when an unbacked runner wins.
We calculate each stake from its share of the selections’ reciprocal odds, round to cents and allocate the remaining cents. Actual rounded returns appear in the table. The default examples are hypothetical and refer to no real race or runner.
The calculator covers simple back bets. It excludes exchange commission, bookmaker minimums, dead heats, scratchings and special settlement. Check the exact market rules before using a split.
